For those of you who follow along on my Instagram (Grace.E.Allen) you know that I am always posting about “something that I recently read.” The interesting thing about this is that my love for reading has kind of come and gone in waves throughout my life. When I think back on my college days, I despised reading, and I now realize that I felt that way because reading was mandatory to doing well in my classes. In undergrad I had to read a lot of material on subjects that I wasn’t necessarily interested in just to get to the courses that I was passionate about (read: prereq’s). Being “forced” to read things that you find boring kind of kills your desire to read anything other than what you have to read to pass class.
My relationship with reading evolved when I started my Masters program, and I now realize that this was because I started being “forced” to read content about things that I was actually passionate about. This shift from undergrad reading material to Masters program reading material, once again, sparked my love for reading, and learning. I was always kind of embarrassed to meander in the “self-help” section of Borders (even though I secretly loved it) because I felt that people would think that “something was wrong with me.” Truth be told, my absolute favorite “genre” of books are in fact, self-help books. I have learned some of the most practical and useful tools in these books, and if I am being so honest, as I have walked through different phases of my life (parent’s divorce, move to new state/school weeks before Freshman year, college and all that college ensues, falling in (what I thought was love) and having my heart broken, giving my heart to Jesus, meeting my soulmate, marriage, motherhood, YOU NAME IT!) I have found so much comfort in the words of other’s that have walked that path before me.
I fully believe that strength comes through sharing our stories. Nobody has lived a perfect life. Nobody has made it through this thing without being hurt, questioned, betrayed, etc and as long as we all walk around putting on this facade that things are unicorns and butterflies, nobody wins. Reading has become a constant for me. It is the first thing that I do in the morning (well, shortly after changing my babies diaper, letting my pups out and making an iced coffee), so, what better place to begin on my list of favorite books than with my daily devotional.
